- 1. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda is outpacing containment efforts.
- 2. Ebola, first documented in 1976 near the Ebola River, has caused several significant outbreaks globally, with varying scales of infection and mortality.
- 3. The most severe Ebola epidemic occurred between 2014 and 2016, affecting 10 countries, including the US, with over 28,000 infections and 11,000 deaths.
- 4. Ebola outbreaks in conflict-affected areas, such as the current one in DRC, are particularly difficult to contain due to challenges in reaching and treating the infected.
- 5. Dr. Selene Gounder, a CBS News medical correspondent, highlighted that a major concern in the current outbreak is the insufficient workforce for contact tracing.
- 6. Dr. Abdu Sabu Shishe of the International Medical Corps noted that healthcare workers face significant risks from Ebola due to poor infection prevention and control and lack of PPE.
- 7. Dr. Gounder explained that when healthcare workers get infected and die, it scares the local population, making them reluctant to seek medical care.
- 8. Dr. Gounder noted that while Ebola is not a primary concern for the World Cup, the event poses risks for spreading other diseases due to a lack of health preparedness funding.
